Question: What drew you to the agriculture industry?
Answer: "FFA was a big factor in drawing me into the agricultural industry. Throughout high school, I participated in many events with the Southmont FFA program. When I was younger, I dreamed of becoming an Ag Technician at Bane-Welker equipment. All of my FFA experience helped me achieve this goal."
Question: What are some ways ag has impacted your life?
Answer: "Agriculture has impacted my life in many ways. This all started in high school. I joined FFA at Southmont High School as a middle schooler. I participated in many different Career Development events. Examples are Soils Evaluation, Crops Evaluation, and Tractor Restoration. As a freshman in high school, I started restoring tractors for the Chevron Delo Restoration contest for FFA. I started restoring a Farmall Cub my first year, sophomore year a Farmall 504, in junior year a Farmall F-12, and senior year I restored an International 1086. For this contest, you had to completely tear the tractor down to the last bolt and restore every system of the tractor. The requirements for this contest were to make a 5-minute video and an 80-page notebook over your whole project process. I made it to the top 12 each year. I won third place with my Farmall F-12 and Reserve Grand Champion with the International 1086. I could then take these skills and submit a proficiency in FFA for my SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience). I took my proficiency to the National FFA Convention and won first place nationally. I also won the State Star in agriculture placement in Indiana. I always wanted to become a diesel mechanic, and these accomplishments led me to achieve my goals and have brought me to where I am today."
Question: Did receiving a scholarship impact your college experience?
Answer: "Yes, receiving a scholarship impacted my college experience positively. I applied for every scholarship possible. This is a great opportunity for students to achieve their future goals. Receiving a scholarship can significantly impact a student's life by reducing financial stress and allowing them to focus on their education. It provides access to resources for tuition, books, and living expenses, reducing the need for student loans and part-time work and freeing up time and energy for academics and personal growth. Moreover, scholarships bring recognition and validation, boosting confidence and motivation, leading to a more fulfilling life journey."
Question: How did getting an ag degree help you meet your goals?
Answer: "I went to Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, for an associate's degree in Applied Science. After that, I became a diesel technician at Bane-Welker equipment. I worked for Bane-Welker for three years. I worked on planters, combines, tractors, and lawnmowers. I gained a lot of hands-on experience. I then applied for a workplace specialist license to teach."
Question: What are you currently doing now?
Answer: "I am currently teaching high school agriculture at North Putnam High School. This has been an awesome opportunity to teach students about my passion for agriculture. I am also an FFA advisor. I have been coaching a soil, crops, and welding team and have made it to the State CDE contest in each of these divisions with my FFA teams. I am passionate about teaching students about how many different opportunities they have within the agriculture industry."

Question: Did receiving a scholarship impact your college experience?
Answer: "Yes! It helped me bear some of the financial responsibility. It allowed me to get out of school with minimal student loan debt."
Question: How did getting an ag degree help you meet your goals?
Answer: "Getting an ag degree helped me get ahead by allowing me to do internships while still in school to get real-world experience. Jenner Ag was founded in 1961 by Gordon Jenner to be an equipment dealership servicing Central Illinois. Those are the facts, but what was it really like in the ag business sixty years ago to now? Let’s take an inside look back with Mike Jenner, former general manager, current board member – and son of Gordon.
“What really stood out to me about that time when my dad was getting the company off the ground, was just how monumental it was that he was really on his own. He was taking a risk and working for himself,” says Mike. “Jenner Sales began servicing Illinois, which is a very agriculturally rich state, and my dad knew he could do what we needed to do to be a success here.”
But Mike says even Gordon couldn’t have predicted what he sees today. “It was one thing to know we could be successful at what he started; it’s another to see just how much we have grown,” Mike says. Gordon would be shocked at the level it has reached in just six decades.”
When Jenner first started, farmers would rent or buy a sprayer or dry spreader. “Custom application changed the way the ag industry operated and in turn, the way dealers did business,” says Mike. “The add in of custom application I believe paved the way to change everything – that was a crucial point in ag.”
For over a decade, Jenner Ag operated above a dentist office on the top floor of a house in Decatur, Illinois. In 1977, the company moved to current location in Harristown, Illinois. “When I started in 1971, we were still a very small company with maybe 7 or 8 associates,” he says. “The moving of headquarters was a huge jump. That move was one of the first factors that allowed us in part to reach those milestones that led to Jenner Ag growing into what is today.”
After that move, the changes at Jenner Ag multiplied, as it went from a company of fewer than 10 employees with two phone lines to almost 90 employees. The company has grown to service both Illinois and Indiana, have a fleet of mobile service techs on the road throughout the territory, and operate three locations – application, ag and precision.
“If Gordon could see the company today – the expansion and innovation – he would be absolutely speechless and proud too,” Mike says.
What is the single most important decision Jenner Ag has made? “Innovation is what has allowed the company to remain successful for six decades,” Mike says. “Having members of the team not be afraid to change. When you have associates and management who support innovation and aren’t afraid to change, it allows Jenner to be a company that adapts to what best fits customer and associate needs.”
Harristown, Ill., September 28, 2021 – The Great Game of Business, Inc. inducted Jenner Ag into the Hall of Fame at its Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas, on September 10, 2021.
Each year the Great Game community honors and celebrates the achievements of companies from around the globe that have fully embraced the principles of open-book management and demonstrated outstanding results. The Hall of Fame honors organizations that have operated using the principles of open-book management for more than a decade with lasting, proven results, and have demonstrated a willingness to spread the word on open-book management in order to help others succeed.
“After 10 years of Great Game play, it’s a true accomplishment to be a member of the Hall of Fame,” says Steve Jones, President of Jenner Ag. “We have learned so much along the way about how all associates can be taught to understand the financial numbers behind the business and have seen how that understanding can make huge impacts on the direction of financials.”
Jenner Ag is celebrating its 60th year of business and its tenth year as a Great Game of Business company. The company is one of the Great Game’s few two-time All-Star Award winners and has been nominated for multiple consecutive years.
Harristown, Ill., September 17, 2021 - A college student from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) has been chosen as the 2021 Jenner Ag Furthering Ag Education Scholarship recipient and will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship for the 2021-2022 school year.
Jarvis S. Williams of Chicago attends UIUC, where he is currently pursing a degree in Technical Systems Management. He is involved in various organizations such as the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE); Minorities in Agricultural, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS); and 100 STRONG. He also serves as Treasurer of the UIUC MANRRS Chapter.
“Jenner Ag is pleased to be able to offer assistance to students who aspire toward a future in agriculture,” says Steve Jones, President of Jenner Ag. “It is important for younger generations to continue to be excited about what this industry has to offer and where it is going in the future.”
This is the eleventh consecutive year that Jenner Ag has provided scholarships for ag students. Illinois and Indiana ag students can apply for assistance furthering their education in an agriculture degree program. Applications are available online at www.jennerag.com or through any Jenner employee and are accepted until June 30 each year.
Jenner Precision is one of only two dealers in Illinois that offered a look at Raven’s newly introduced OMNi brand of autonomous solutions. This autonomous platform empowers ag professionals to perform multiple farm tasks simultaneously without a driver. OMNiDRIVE is Raven’s aftermarket technology kit that transforms existing tractors into driverless machines. It is the first farming application that allows the farmer to monitor and operate a driverless tractor from the cab of the harvester so the harvester can offload on the go, then return the tractor and grain cart to a predetermined unloading area —all without a second driver.
“Providing an event where farmers were able to see OMNiDRIVE run with their own eyes was an honor,” says Bryan Fehr, Location Manager at Jenner Precision. “Being one of only two dealers afforded this opportunity allows us to truly show the market what OMNiDRIVE can do and how it can impact anyone’s operation. “It really opens up new doors for farmers to impact their labor, efficiency – and of course their bottom lines.”
For more information on OMNiDRIVE and future demo possibilities, call 815-692-6655.
Jenner Ag’s owner says implementing the Great Game of Business has profoundly impacted culture at the company, which is celebrating 60 years – 10 of those playing The Great Game of Business. “Even after a decade, management and associates still find ways to change Game play and improve results,” says Steve Jones, CEO. “Of all those years, the ones we have played The Great Game of Business have been some of our best years, both financially and with associate engagement. We see that trend continuing in future years with the help of The Great Game of Business and the open-book management policy.”
Jenner Ag is one of only two companies to receive the All-Star Award two times. It has also received eight nominations for various awards. The Great Game of Business will announce the 21st annual All-Star Award Team and All-Star Champions at the 29th Annual Gathering of Games, the world’s largest open-book management conference, September 8-10 in Dallas, Texas.
